There are several

people that only want to chat with friends and family, as it gives them

order to spark a discussion.

The
idea of instant messengers is that they are quick and simple. Try to
avoid writing long paragraphs that keep your partner waiting, especially
if you're a slow typer. Instead, aim to send one sentence or line at a
time, as if you're having a real conversation. This allows your partner
to keep up to speed with your conversation, even if you have a lot to
say.
Limitations of Instant Messaging
One of the troubles
with instant messengers is the lack of emotion that text carries, which
can lead to confusion or misunderstandings. Emoticons are little
pictures that display the tone of your words, such as whether a sentence
is said as a joke or tongue in cheek. Emoticons may be less acceptable
in professional environments, so in these scenarios, make sure your
words are clear and concise to try and limit confusion.
Additional Tips for Using Instant Messaging
Remember,
although IM's are incredibly handy, you should also display caution
when using them. If you're not video-chatting, make sure the person
you're talking to is who they say they are, before you reveal sensitive
information. Also, if you intend to talk to strangers, be prepared for
anything! If you're sensible, you'll find that IM's are an invaluable
method for keeping social connections alive.
